3/13/00 If you are writing your second paper on Smoke Signals, I strongly encourage you to watch the movie at least one more time to pick out scenes you will analyze in the paper. If you don't want to rent the movie, you can check it out from Film Studies (Ellison 1720) and take it to Kerr Hall to watch it again.
3/6/00 Because I cannot access material posted to the Exchange Server before it went down, you will need to re-post or post a new response for the first online discussion assignment on "Representing Native American Cultures" to the class email list before class on Friday, March 10. If you're writing a new response, use an example from Lone Ranger and Tonto or Smoke Signals.
3/6/00 REMINDER. You need to attend one of the following screenings of Smoke Signals: Mon 3/6 7-8:30 SH1430 or Tues 3/7 7-8:30 NH 1109. (required)
2/28/00 I've added a few new paper topics to those already provided for you to choose from for the second paper. See the assignments page or print out a copy.
2/25/00 The online discussion response on "Cultural Adaptation" due Sunday, February 27, should be posted to class email list, not the Exchange Server.
2/9/00 The online discussion response on "Transcribing Oral Traditions" due Thursday, February 10, should be posted to the class email list, not the Exchange Server.
2/4/00 The screenings of Smoke Signals have been scheduled. You need to attend one of the following: Mon 3/6 7-9:30 SH1430 or Tues 3/7 7-9:30 NH 1109. (required)
2/4/00 The Exchange Server is still down. We are working on transferring the program to a new server. Suspend all online responses until further notice. We may have to use the class email list to post responses instead of the Exchange Server.
1/28/00 The Exchange Server went down because of storage problems which is why some of you could not logon or compose your online responses. Those of you who wrote out your responses or saved them to disk, hold onto them until further notice.
1/21/00 I've entered your login names and passwords for the Filemaker Pro Database and Exchange Server, so you can now enter records into the linkbase and timeline for your group project. You will be using the Exchange Server for your online discussion responses, which we will talk about next week. Let me know if you have any problems accessing the databases. Remember your login name=your last name and your password=your first initial plus your perm number plus your last initial (a1234567b). Also, remember to read through the online guide to entering records into the Filemaker Pro databases.

1/12/00 A copy of the course reader is available at RBR.
1/5/00 Students taking English 134NA should fill out the online course Entrance Survey (which will provide the instructor with their e-mail address and other information) and subscribe to the course E-Mail List as soon as possible. If you are registered for the course, you can fill out the survey and subscribe to the e-mail list even before the first day of class.
1/3/00 Students without their own computer and Internet access, or those desiring faster or supplementary computing resources, may use the PC or Mac labs at Instructional Computing during the quarter (Phelps Hall 1521). Members of English 134NA can pick up priority-access stickers with proof of class enrollment (such as a syllabus or registrar's schedule confirmation) from 9 am to 4 pm on January 13 and 14 in the Phelps Courtyard. These stickers permit use of the labs during hours not reserved by other courses for in-lab lectures. For lab schedules, see http://www.ic.ucsb.edu or call 893-8414. Instructional Computing also offers orientation workshops during the first week of the quarter and software workshops throughout the quarter. For information about the software (including Web editors) available at the labs, see http://shg.ic.ucsb.edu/
