The Storyspace Program

  • Eastgate's overview of the Storyspace program

    • An authoring environment built around an "object" or "chunk" paradigm of "writing spaces" linked to each other through a GUI interface designed around a flow-chart mapping metaphor. Text-centered (though later versions add image capability). Sophisticated linking and guard-field mechanisms that allow for the creation of complex narrative logics. In later versions: ability to port to the Web (e.g., Oliver Hockenhull's Conceived)

    • A reading environment that is a restricted version of the authoring environment. Includes the potential for different views of the writing spaces, flow-chart map views, annotations, bookmarking. Limited navigation aids (e.g., history feature).

    • No provision for distributed, online authoring

    • No provision for distributed reading or the collective use of a work (public navigation and reference to writing spaces, cut-and-paste, chat, etc.)

  • Michael Joyce's particular implementation of Storyspace in afternoon, a story:

    • default reading and branch reading
    • guard fields
    • invisible links
